Abstract

This article examines the transformation of marriage in Mexico, from its canonical regulation during the colonial era to its current status as a civil institution of the State. It analyzes the coexistence of civil and religious marriage within a secular framework that guarantees legal effects under the State and respects religious freedom in a pluralistic society.
